Neandertal spatial patterns and occupation dynamics: a regional focus on the central region in Mediterranean Iberia
2020
Species richness of migratory birds is influenced by global climate change
2007
Aim Global climate change is increasingly influencing ecosystems. Long-term effects on the species richness and composition of ecological communities have been predicted using modelling approaches but, so far, hardly demonstrated in the field. Here, we test whether changes in the composition of bird communities have been influenced by recent climate change. Location Europe. Methods We focus on the proportion of migratory and resident bird species because these groups are expected to respond differently to climatic change. We used the spatial relationship between climatic factors and bird communities in Europe to predict changes in 21 European bird communities under recent climate change.…
The influence of land use on the genetic structure of populations of the common frog Rana temporaria
1990
In order to find out the influence of land use and topographic distance on the genetic structure of populations of the common frog Rana temporaria L. in the Saar-Palatinate lowlands (Federal Republic of Germany), tissue of larvae was examined by means of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. A total of 24 loci coding for 14 different enzymes were studied. Genotype frequencies, allele frequencies and mean heterozygosity were calculated, and genetic distances using Nei's formula. Strong deviations from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were found; the degree of homozygosity was higher than expected. Separation by highways reduced average heterozygosity as well as genetic polymorphism of local p…
Land use functions — a multifunctionality approach to assess the impact of land use changes on land use sustainability
2008
Part 5. Regional and local evaluation - 17; International audience; The dramatic changes in land use observed in Europe in the last fifty years have generally resulted in improvement of human welfare and economic development. On the other hand, they have caused serious environmental problems. There is therefore a need for approaches that help to understand in an integrative way the economic, environmental and societal impacts that land use changes have on sustainability. Sustainability Impact Assessment(SIA), which assesses the impact of policies on sustainability, addresses this challenge. SIA partly builds on the concept of the multifunctionality of land which helps to deal with the compl…
Integrating soil survey, land use management and political ecology: A case study in a border area between Peru and Ecuador
2013
In Latin America countries, competition for access to natural resources among different groups has been a major reason for the outburst of violence over the last decades. One of the main aims of the political ecology concerns the understanding of the environmental conditions that can underlies the social conflict among people. Such understanding needs to be based on a detailed investigation of the natural resources of the landscape, mainly the soils. Few years ago the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs financed a soil survey with a humanitarian purpose: the development of a peace plan between Peru and Ecuador by improving the socio-economic conditions of the rural populations living in th…
L’Allocation Method nella stima delle aree edificabili
2010
The allocation method does value the building areas on the base of the exchange coefficient, but sometimes it is applied in an uncritical way. Following the traditional appraisal is it possible to precise the methodological conditions. The study means to demonstrate that the market value of the building area is obtained multiplying the construction cost by the ratio between the exchange coefficient and its complementary one. The new formulation considers the effective costs and proceeds distribution in the time, with the cash flows analysis, and moreover concurs to express convenience judgments for building area transactions.
Agricultural management affects the response of soil bacterial community structure and respiration to water-stress
2013
International audience; Soil microorganisms are responsible for organic matter decomposition processes that regulate soil carbon storage and mineralisation to CO2. Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency of drought events, with uncertain consequences for soil microbial communities. In this study we tested the hypothesis that agricultural management used to enhance soil carbon stocks would increase the stability of microbial community structure and activity in response to water-stress. Soil was sampled from a long-term field trial with three soil carbon management systems and was used in a laboratory study of the effect of a dry wet cycle on organic C mineralisation and microbi…
Biogeographical patterns of soil molecular microbial biomass as influenced by soil characteristics and management
2011
Aim The spatial organization of soil microbial communities on large scales and the identification of environmental factors structuring their distribution have been little investigated. The overall objective of this study was to determine the spatial patterning of microbial biomass in soils over a wide extent and to rank the environmental filters most influencing this distribution.

Effects of parent material on soil erosion within Mediterranean new vineyard plantations
2018
[EN] Parent material can determine specific physical and chemical soil properties and, therefore, soil erosion rates. However, for new vine plantations, there is not enough research on soil erosion assessment on different parent materials which could be helpful for agricultural management plans. The main aim of this research was to quantify soil erosion rates of two recent vineyard plantations under similar climate and land use management conditions, but on different parent materials, namely colluvium (2 years old) and marls (8 years old), located within the Les Alcusses valley vineyards in Eastern Spain. To achieve this goal, the ISUM (improved stock unearthing method) was applied. ISUM in…
